This small strip-mall shop, oddly still carrying the half-Irish moniker of its predecessor, has been churning out exotic ice creams and sorbets since 1980. However, Mashti Malone's has several spots reserved for their customers (basically right in front of their store), so 95% of the time I can pull right in to one of those.Įxotic flavors and traditional favorites make this Hollywood shop a glacial hit. Now, a note about parking-Mashti Malone's in just one store in a mini mall of stores (one of which is the "Lava Lounge," a grimy rock bar or something). Finally, I challenge you to try my special: a shake with one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of strawberry (it's a chocolate-covered strawberry taste).
Also, I've always found the owner/workers to be very pleasant. I think they're pretty good and it gives you something new to try. Anyways, like I said, Mashti Malone's makes their own ice cream. To be honest, those just aren't my style. These are Middle Eastern-style ice creams you also have some syrups at the tables that are meant to be poured on top of these ice creams. Probably their most unique hook is their rose water and saphron ice creams. Well, although I'm still looking for the Holy Grail, I can say that I do enjoy Mashti Malone's because it meets the other criteria I look for (i.e., unique, homemade, not the same place/same thing). Maybe you're even looking for the Holy Grail of ice creams, something so divine your taste buds will be born again. So you want to try different ice creams, especially homemade ice creams. You're bored with the same place and same thing you get at chains. Homemade ice cream in Hollywood – I figure that most of the people reading this are ice cream aficionados, like me. If either Mashti – or his brother Mehdi – are there, introduce yourself and they’ll be more than happy to chat you up with the history of ice cream in Persia/Iran and how the unique rosewater-based flavors they specialize in. Personally, I’m a fan of the more plain jane flavors like pistachio and chocolate chip – especially in the awesome “Clone Cone” form (a Clown Cone with another cone placed on top) – which have the natural flavors and creaminess you really want if you’re gonna take a Fro Yo break and splurge the calories on the real thing. But braving the local color and uber-tight parking lot more than pays off once you get a taste of the homemade Persian frozen delicacies like Safron Rosewater Ice Cream (their signature). Then again, the fact that it’s in one of the sketchier late night mini-malls around might have something to do with it. That’s why its such a surprise that so many people haven’t tried it out. The Real Deal for Exotic Ice Cream in the Heart of H'Wood – Rumor has it that Mashti’s is the oldest ice cream join in Hollywood.
